Analysis of a Music Video

I decided to pick two music videos that differ in that one is more recent than the other. This will help to see what has changed and what has stayed the same. I picked Jamie T- Emily's Heart. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9KXygrI2yA&ob=av2e - It's a narrative based idea telling the story of a young boy's journey over a day. -CAMERA- There are a variety of shot types in this video which I found interesting. Videos like Katy Perry's I kissed a girl tended to stick mostly with close ups. However this video uses long shots, close ups, low angle and direct address. Though these shots are still conventional depending on your type of idea whether it's narrative, concept or performance, it was interesting to see all these shots used to create this music video. I feel this applies to one of Goodwin's theories about visuals matching the lyrics. The shots reflect this boy's mood in the process of his day. - EDITING- This music video though seemingly attempting to capture a realistic story line uses effects such as blurring shots and using jump cuts to reinforce time going by. In terms of transitions they were largely straight cuts which helps depict a storyline. -MISE-EN-SCENE- In terms of costumes, it uses everyday clothing reinforcing the narrative based idea. This also adds to the realism of the video. A very conventional aspect of a music video is the variety of locations which this music video uses. It uses the sea, and what looks like a series of places in a town. My second music video is a video that is slightly older. The Buggles- Video killed the Radio Star http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8r-tXRLazs&ob=av2n - Its a performance/concept based music video -CAMERA- This video contains closeups throughout. It focus' on close ups of the instruments being played and the singers as well as the conept based ideas such as a young girl and an older woman doing weird things. -EDITING-The video uses fades to blacks, explosions for effect and tends to repeat some shots. This may be due to the fact it's an older video therefore to fill in gaps, shots are repeated or whether it's used to make the video look effective. -MISE-EN-SCENE- In terms of locations, there are a variety of locations. A few are, a science looking lab, a stage and a white room where the band play their instruments. I felt that the video contained a lot of science and technology throughout the music video which may reinforce the time in which this video was released where science and technology was progressing fast! Overall, despite the music videos being from different eras there are quite a few elements that are very similar. The fact they both use a variety of locations suggest to me that it is a key convention in any performance, concept or narrative idea. It helps the video become more entertaining. Audience's won't want to watch a three minute video which just includes the band playing their instruments - it would be rather boring!

The history of a Music Video

I realised when I went through my blog that I haven't really included an history on music videos. I went onto the internet and found some really interesting stuff about the back ground of a music video. 1894 The first step towards a music video called the illustrated song whereby two publishers, Edward B Marks and Joe Stern hired an electrician and a few performers to come together and produce a product that will help promote their song, "The little lost child." The electrician George Thomas reflected still images onto a screen similar to live performances. This was the start of music videos. How Music video's started Music videos started by being relatively narrative based with a story being told with the song the artist produced. The beetles in 1964 starred in their first feature film called A Hard Days Night. It was shot in black and white and was used for comedic effect. The british show Top of the Pops began playing music videos in the 1970s however there were strict guidelines about how many videos were shown. Therefore the best videos were played in the hope that they would be popular enough to play again the following week. In 1980, David Bowie scored his first UK number one in nearly a decade thanks to director David Mallet's eye catching promo for "Ashes to Ashes". Another act to succeed with this tactic was Madness, who shot on 16 mm and 35 mm, constructing their clips as "micro-comedic" short films. Music videos that caused controversy Music Jackson's video Black and White was cut because it showed him apparently touching himself inappropriately. They Don't care about us was banned from most music stations such as BBC, VH1, MTV because of the message it was giving off and the visuals were seen as inappropriate. Madonna's music video in 1990 "Justify my love" was banned from MTV because of the homosexuality and cross dressing throughout which caused uproar in the media. Papa don't Reach and Like A Prayer also caused great criticism because of its religious theme within both music videos. The Prodigy's music video "firestarter"was banned from the BBC because it had referencing to arson! I noticed that throughout music video history, there is a similar concept that applies now. The video is their to promote the song and hopefully become more popular as a result. This is why music videos are incredibly important!

Monday 30th January - Media lesson

During my lesson, I've started thinking about my poster as part of my digi pack. I had difficulty in working out how to make an image within my footage as a still frame. It took a lot of time and I needed help but its a skill I have now developed and I know for the future!!
I now need to add this image to photo shop and will post the image on to this blog so I can explain why I'm going to use it.

I have also now booked in for a camera this weekend so I am hoping to complete all filming. Some clips I had filmed I disliked and as a perfectionist I have to re do it! I'm just hoping the weather is going to be on my side because I don't need rain!
