Goodwin's Theory

As part of our contextual research, in class we looked at Goodwin's theory and applied it to three videos.

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight
Genre Characteristics- Rock
Relationship between music and visuals and lyrics and visuals- the music is triumphant as though they are going on a mission therefore matches the visuals, as they are shown to be visiting space.
visuel motifs and style. what makes the artist unique- The use of different effects. out of space. outside the normal. old fashioned clothing to emphasise the time period.
notion of looking-voyeuristic treatment especially women- women in little clothing as mermaids.
intertextual referencing- 1902 story

Shakira- She Wolf
Genre Characteristics- Pop-close ups
Relationships between music and visuals and lyrics and visuals- lyrics match the visuals as she is talking about a wolf and is dressed very similar to a wolf. The howling of wolves as an effect in the music connects well with the visuals.
Visual motifs and style. What makes the artist unique- Her dancing skill is what most of us focused on yet its very suggestive.
Notion of looking voyeuristic treatment especially women- little clothing which attracts the mans eye.
There is no inter textual in this song.

The Avalanches- frontier phychiatrist
genre characteristics- Its a concept focused music video
Relationship between music and visuals and lyrics and visuals- Link to lyrics because its very weird!
visuel motifs & style. What makes the artist unique-weird and random people. The characters involved are older which is very unusual. we expect to see young, beautiful women and men.
