Previous Student Examples

As part of our research, we were asked to look at previous student examples and comment on ways we think they could improve and their strengths.
I thought it would be a good idea to look at some students that have used the same song as I have so that I can see their interpretation and get some ideas.


Strengths
1) They use a variety of effects which makes it enjoyable to watch. Its also a key convention that music videos contain so by doing this makes their music video look realistic.
The types of effects used were colour distortion which I think contributed to the mood (getting ready to go out and drink.) - a similar storyline to mine.
They fastened the speed in some shots which I think looked really good. It was well timed in the music. As the music got more up beat the shot fastened.
Another interesting shot I noticed was when the camera zooms in to the phone and we see the girls dancing. I thought that was a really clever idea and looked really well constructed.
They used split screen with the two girls both singing making the video look more realistic for the audience.

2) Lip syncing was very strong throughout this music video. Its frustrating when the lips don't match the lyrics and we seem to concentrate more on that than the music video itself. Its really hard to do and takes a lot of effort yet it looked very professional in this video.

3) The fast paced editing was very effective. It not only matched with the song choice being up beat but also matched the visuals. The idea that the narrative was about going out meant the editing was fast and flowed really well. There were no dodgy cuts or movement of the camera which also helped its presentation and look of professionalism.

Weaknesses
1) Two girls were singing yet the voice was of only one singer therefore for me didn't really work. I think to improve, they could have had one of the girls being in the narrative and the other being the artist. It just felt as though it wasn't as realistic.

2)I think the music video as a whole was very similar to the actual music video by Katy Perry especially at the beginning. To improve, they could have been a bit more inventive and thought about their own ideas.

3) the close up of lips. I didn't like this shot as I think its not a very high thought about shot. Its almost used to fill in the gaps when I think they could have used a midshot of the whole of the face doing make up.

Overall I really enjoyed this music video and I think it had more pros than cons! It gave me a lot of incite about how much effort I need to give to make this music video perfect!
